Emma Watson is facing a social media backlash this week, after a 2013 Lancome ad featuring her promoting a skin lightening product resurfaced.
Lancome's Blanc Expert Malanolyser is formulated to help restrict the production melanin - the pigment that gives your skin colour - and while some are arguing that it's designed to combat dark spots and acne scars rather than provide overall bleaching, others aren't convinced.
Journalist Naomi Mabita, who kickstarted the debate when she called out Lancome and Emma in a feature about 'Perfect Whiteness' for Gal Dem, criticises the actress for supporting an industry that is "designed to make us feel like our skin is a problem that we can pay for them to solve".
Many appear to agree, with some questioning Emma's feminism:
However, Lancome's site describes the product as 'helping to prevent dark spots in the skin, associated with age and exposure to the sun'.
