Bikini wax styles: What do all the confusing names mean and look like?

With summer just around the corner, it's time to whack on your swimming costume, hit the beach and unleash your hairy bits on the world (well, sort of).

While some gals are totally cool with keeping things nice and natural down there, others might decide that a bikini wax is a good option to neaten things up a bit, but all of the salon lingo that comes with a wax down thurrr can get pretty confusing.

Wanna find out what all the different names mean AND what they look like? Here's our super handy guide to loads of bikini wax styles, with some nifty recreations made with glittery sequins.

Nice and natural

Most Popular

First thing's first, there's nothing wrong with keeping things in your knickers 100% natural. Don't feel pressured to do anything to your pubes if you don't wanna - it's TOTALLY your choice and you shouldn't do it for anyone else. Got it? Good.

Basic bikini line wax

If you just want a bit of a tidy up and a very slight bit of definition to the hair down there, keep it simple with a basic bikini line wax. You can usually even keep your knickers on to get this done, as it'll just remove the hair outside of a basic, modest panty line ie. anything that goes too high or too far down your thighs. Simples.

Full bikini line wax

Pretty much the same thing, but with a touch more hair removed to take the sides and the top line of your pubes a bit deeper and more defined than the basic bikini wax. This'll also include anything on inner thighs, and might be a safer option if you're going for a high cut swimming costume.

French wax: landing strip

A French wax will whip of all or most of the pubic hair in the front (depending on if you ask for a strip to be left) and the hair in the middle (on the labia), but leaves the hair around the back alone, which is what makes it different from a Brazilian.

The landing strip is just an example, but a pretty popular one. You can ask for whatever sort of shape you'd like and it's a personal choice, and a lot of people request them. The two most popular shapes are a rectangular strip about the size of a postage stamp or a triangle of similar size.

French wax is a good choice for if you want a smooth, clean look up front and in the middle, but don't want to be totally bare. And because this one's fancier than just removing the hair outside your knicker line, it's best to get it done professionally.

Brazilian wax: Love heart

Brazilian wax is different from a French wax as this one will remove all the hair off the bikini line, from front aaaaall the way to the back (and yep, we mean all round your bum too). Just like the French wax, it's pretty common for women to ask for a shape to be left on the front - often a landing strip, triangle, square or rectangle to stop things getting totally bare. It's up to you.

This one's a good'un for gals who like to wear a thong, or just want to be completely/almost completely hairless from front to back for a totally clean feeling. Although newsflash, pubes aren't unhygienic.

As for the love heart, YEP people really do ask for all sorts of shapes, and a heart is actually pretty popular. Although experts reckon complicated shapes are a bad idea, as they require laying wax strips against the direction of the hair growth, breaking the hair and causing ingrowns. Eep.

Brazilian wax: Bermuda triangle

Just another example of what some women like to ask for when they head to the salon to get a pubic pampering. This one takes the full bikini wax to the next level, as you'll be left with a similar shape on the front, but just without all the hair still on your labia and your bum.

Brazilian wax: Mini triangle

And if you want a barely-there-hair kinda look across your pubic bone, you can take your triangle even smaller by further minimising the shape on the top and down the sides. We've paired the shapes with a Brazilian as it's more common, but you could also pair a French wax with a shape.

Hollywood

Aaaaand your pubes are OUTTA HERE. Whereas a Brazilian can still leave you with some hair across the front if you choose to, a Hollywood takes things to the extreme and waxes EVERYTHING off. Nothing. Nada. Nil. Zilch. Some ladies love it, others don't rate it. Again, it's totally down to your own preference.

Remember, you're totally in control of things when you go and get a bikini wax - it's all on your terms and you can keep as much or as little as you want.

Double check with your technician to make sure you both are on the same page of exactly how you want your bikini wax to look. Don't worry about being too specific or too fussy about your preferences, and don't worry about getting into all sorts of mad positions to get it waxed off either - they've seen it aaaall before.
