If you wanna talk Harry Potter animals, we'd argue that Buckbeak, Fang, Norbert and Hedwig are all up there as the best. Scabbers would be too, but he kinda lost his right to that when he revealed himself to be Voldemort's number one fan. Typical.
But y'know who's a severly underrated animal of the wizarding world? Hermione's ginger cat Crookshanks, that's who, and now a crazy fan theory has arrived to make you question everything you ever thought you knew about him.
Waaay back in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Hermione nabs herself a squishy-faced furry ginger cat named Crookshanks and falls instantly in love with him like any true crazy cat lady would do.
Harry and Ron hate his guts to begin with, but once he helps Sirius prove his innocence and stops Harry from attempting to murder him, he wins 'em over slightly. Good work, Crookshanks.
According to this preeeetty wild fan theory however, Hermione wasn't Crookshanks' first owner. It claims that, before Hermione bought him from the Magical Menagerie, he actually belonged to the Potter family. Say whut?
When Hermione first buys Crookshanks, the shopworker comments that he's been "there for ages; no one wanted him." Now hold that thought.
Harry finds a letter that his mum wrote to Sirius in the Deathly Hallows, where she mentions that Harry almost killed the cat on his toy broomstick. Harry even wonders while reading the letter what had happened to the cat after his parents died.
So um, is it possible that someone rescued it – Hagrid maybe? – and took it to the Magical Menagerie in Diagon Alley for another wizard family to adopt. WOAH.
There is a slight glitch in this one though because, as the Potters' best friend, Sirius definitely would have known their cat. And since he speaks about having to gain Crookshanks' trust and doesn't mention knowing him previously, that doesn't really make much sense. BUT HEY.
Let us know what you reckon to the latest bonkers Potter theory. We're over on Twitter @Sugarscape, waiting to talk fuzzy ginger cats.
