You can always trust your friends to have an opinion on who you're dating and it looks like even in the land of celebs, it's just as important.
Case in point is Nick Jonas, who has just revealed that it was old friend Demi Lovato who encouraged him to split with model ex-girlfriend Olivia Culpo and give the single life a go.
Having landed a cover of Billboard together this week, the pair have been dishing on all sorts of things, including life as a single guy and gal, their friendship and also that time Demi hit one of the Jonas Brothers' team back in 2010.
After dating for two years, Nick and former girlfriend Olivia split last June. But instead of mopping up his tears, Demi reckons it was a majorly smart move on Nick's part.
Explaining how he leant on Demi during the breakup, Nick tells the mag: "I internalise things, so we have this rule that we never want to hear about it in a tweet or something. She'd read me the riot act, so she's the third person I call — my dad, Joe, then Demi."
Revealing she told him that maybe the split was a good ideas, he says: "She was like, 'Just go, create and be free.' She also said some other things …"
"He's a guy in his 20s and he's famous and he likes to have a lot of fun," Demi adds, bringing a dose of realness. "Listen, even when he was in a relationship, I was like, 'Get out of that. You could f*** anybody that you want right now, so have fun and do that.
"I go, 'Honestly, I didn't like her anyway.' It's not because she's mean or anything, but he has such a great sense of humor and I want him to be with someone that makes him laugh. I can tell if something's up because he'll close off."
The reason Demi and Nick can talk to each other so frankly has a lot to do with how much they've been through together. A big moment was the incident where Demi lashed out at a member of the Jonas Brothers team during a tour together in 2010 before checking into rehab.
After that it was a hard time for their friendship and Demi explains: "I distanced myself as I was getting involved with self-destructive things. After treatment, I had to have some time sober before I wasn't embarrassed to talk to him.
"Nick says I sent text messages, but I don't remember shit. The first time we saw each other since that tour was my [2012 Los Angeles] concert at The Greek. We caught up right before the show, then performed. It was an emotional reunion -- I got one of my best friends back."
It was hard for Nick too at first and after the initial incident, his main concern was the fans and potentially getting sued.
"I mean, it was bad," he says. "On top of losing a friend, we have seven dates left, it's a big production, people are expecting to see Demi and that's not going to happen. I was angry, because a week before I pleaded with her to confide in me. We talked on the plane for two hours."
"Really? To be totally honest, I don't remember that," Demi replies. "It's unfortunate I had to go through that stuff in order to appreciate what I have in front of me."
