Pretty Little Liars, besides being one of our fave telly shows of all time, is also a great vehicle for seeing how difficult dealing with the day to day stresses of school life can be - just without the pyscho murderer running amuck.

But someone who knows about just how much you can struggle through your school days is Troian Bellisario, who plays uber smart Spencer Hastings on the show, and she's revealed all about her past struggles - including self-harming during high school and dealing with an eating disorder.

Troian's been opening up to Seventeen magazine about her past, and explained that she felt the need to be perfect for her family, which then led to some seriously self-destructive behaviour.

She told the mag: "I started self-harming when I was a junior. I would withhold food or withhold going out with my friends, based on how well I did that day in school.

"Being a teenager is chaotic because you’re kind of coming into your own. I didn’t know what was right and what was wrong, so I think I created this bizarre system of checks and balances to create order in my world. But it really backfired.

"It was about wanting to please my father and mother and wanting to be perfect to everybody. I just thought if I ever expressed [to my parents] any sadness or anger or anything that’s going on with me, they would disown me. I kept a lot of it bottled up inside, and it turned into self-destructive behaviour."

Troian also revealed that she couldn't ask for help because she thought people wouldn't be her friend if she was honest.

She explained: "I felt this sadness, and I thought if people really knew what was going on inside me, they wouldn’t want to hang out with me. So I tried to keep it light and funny. I became imprisoned [by my eating disorder and self-harm]. And it was something I fought with."

After her friends found her journal and discovered what she was going through, Troian had a kind of intervention with her family. Afterwards, Troian says, she asked herself: "What do I really want to be doing? What would make me happy?"

Despite getting through the tough period, Troian admitted that it's still an 'ongoing struggle' for her, saying: "Sometimes I’ve felt like a fraud. I’m not like these other girls - I don’t dress like that and I don’t know how to do my hair.

"The minute I’m off that stage, I try to get as 'me' as possible. I do that by piling on my black eyeliner, and I put on my ripped tights. Dressing like myself again helps."

Troi's co-stars and friends have already taken to Twitter to share how proud they are of her for her interview, with Ashley Benson posting: "Wow babe @SleepintheGardn you inspire me. Your @seventeenmag article is amazing. Not to mention you look amazing on the cover. Congrats."

Lucy Hale, who's also dealt with an eating disorder in the past, also tweeted, saying: "Everyone check out @SleepintheGardn seventeen mag interview. A very inspiring article. Proud of her for speaking up!"

But what did you make of Troian's super honest interview? Pretty inspiring, right? Comments please.
