Whether you've binge watched an entire show in a week or invested years of your life growing to love and like, actually know the cast, there's nothing more heartbreaking than when one of your favourite TV characters dies unexpectedly.
It's not even like a film where you've only watched 'em for a couple of hours – you've literally spent SO MUCH TIME becoming emotionally involved and dedicated to this person, so it's perfectly acceptable to lose your shit when they pass away in (probably) tragic circumstances.
Shows like The Walking Dead, Grey's Anatomy, American Horror Story and The Vampire Diaries have all ruined our lives with unexpected departures, so here's 15 of TV's saddest deaths that have given you trust issues.
Oh, and obviously - big fat SPOILER ALERT.
1. Game of Thrones - The Red Wedding
Why it ruined your life: Because three of the show's biggest characters were wiped out in one brutal, completely unexpected bloodbath. Talisa was carrying an unborn child, Rob was just about to take the throne, and Caitlyn was the ultimate badass mum who made everything okay.
How sad was it: Five tears out of five.
2. Grey's Anatomy - McDreamy
Why it ruined your life: OH THE INJUSTICE. McDreamy's death was particularly brutal as, although he was still alive and breathing in the ambulance, it was the shit doctors at the hospital that cost him his life. WHY DIDN'T HE GET THE CT SCAN. WHY GOD WHY.
How sad was it: More anger than tears. A solid four tears out of five.
3. American Horror Story - Vivien Harmon
Why it ruined your life: When it was revealed that Vivien had a lovely demon baby inside her, we knew the birth wasn't going to end well. After delivering the twins (one stillborn and one lovely demon baby later), Vivien - basically the only likeable character - died off blood loss because the Victorian ghost doctor had no clue what he was doing. INJUSTICE.
How sad was it: Three outta five, because she had a pretty crap time before she died too.
4. Desperate Housewives - Mike Delfino
Why it ruined your life: Mike and Susan finally seemed to be working things out after all sorts of ridiculous/dramatic issues over the years, only for him to go and shockingly die in her arms in a very emotional fashion, after being shot on their own doorstep. Weeping for days.
How sad was it: Pretty bloody sad because Susan is the best. Four outta five tears.
5. The Walking Dead - Lori Grimes
Why it ruined your life: Well this one wasn't exactly a joy to watch. It probably would have been easier to see Lori mauled by zombies, but after delivering her baby, Lori bleeds out from her emergency, hack job C-section. And then her young son has to shoot her in the head to stop her turning, which was a nice cherry on top.
How sad was it: About as traumatic as it gets. Five outta five tears for sure.
6. The Vampire Diaries - Elena Gilbert
Why it ruined your life: Elena sacrifices herself to save Matt, the last (kinda) innocent person on the series. Elena would rather die than see a friend die for her, which makes her instantly awesome. Sure she might have quickly come back as a vamp, but her death was still jarring and unexpected, and seeing her mourn for herself made for pretty hard watching.
How sad was it: Oooh, it had such a long-term effect on the show that this one gets four tears outta five.
7. Grey's Anatomy - Denny Duquette
Why it ruined your life: When Izzie fell in love with Denny, we always knew that it was doomed to end in some kind of heartbreaking way. But for some reason we still watched it with hope as Izzie did everything she could to get him a new heart, accepted his marriage proposal, and laid beside him in his hospital bed as he died of a stroke.
How sad was it: TEN OUT OF FIVE.
8. Breaking Bad - Walter White
Why it ruined your life: There was always a 50/50 chance he would have died, and stupidly we dared to dream that there'd be a happy ending. HOPE BREEDS MISERY. Unfortunately, the machine gun contraption that killed the baddies also managed to Walt him with a bullet, leading to his slow death. RIP.
How sad was it: Not entirely surprising so maybe only three tears out of five. We've seen sadder.
9. Pretty Little Liars - Maya St Germain
Why it ruined your life: Emily and the PLL gang arrive at Maya's house to discover she's been murdered before we'd even got the chance to know her properly, and as the bodybag containing her dead girlfriend is wheeled past her, Emily breaks down and sobs her heart out. It gets us every single time we watch it, but there is a teeny tiny part of every PLL fan that suspects she's out there somewhere.
How sad was it: A good three outta five, but there's only so sad that PLL can get before you remember how bloody frustrating it is.
10. The OC - Marissa Cooper
Why it ruined your life: SHE WAS ABOUT TO FINALLY BE HAPPY, for gawds sake. Not only that, but her dying would later result in the writers pairing Ryan up with Taylor bloody Townsend. Did you think about that when you quit the show, Mischa Barton? Did you? DID YOU THINK ABOUT HOW YOU WOULD SCAR US? Selfish.
How sad was it: Two outta five tears, because it was reeeal sad, but Mischa Barton did accidentally spoil her own death before the episode aired. Lolz.
11. Teen Wolf - Alison Argent
Why it ruined your life: Because it sent shockwaves through the whole fandom with loads of Teen Wolf viewers wondering whether she'd be coming back as a ghost or something. But nope, her death was real and as tragic as they get - not helped by the fact that she died in Scott's arms while professing her undying love for him.
How sad was it: THE SADDEST. Five tears out of five.
12. 8 Simple Rules - Paul Hennessy
Why it ruined your life: A sitcom wouldn't normally make it on to a list like this - but 8 Simple Rules were forced to write in the death of dad Paul into the script after actor John Ritter unexpectedly died in real life. The cast's obviously genuine mourning made this heartbreakingly sad for fans to see.
How sad was it: So sad that it doesn't even rate on our tear scale, and genuinely difficult to watch.
13. Dexter - Rita Morgan
Why it ruined your life: Dexter returning home to find his lovely wife Rita dead in a bath of her own blood with their son crying on the floor wasn't exactly easy watching. Particularly as Trinity only killed her because he was pissed off at Dexter.
How sad was it: A good four out of five tears, and only 'cos all the shiny blood did make it slightly gross.
14. Downton Abbey - Matthew Crawley
Why it ruined your life: It literally took YEARS for Mary to realise she loved secret soulmate Matthew and loads more for them to finally end up together - and then he went and died on the road because the actor wanted to do something else. Oh cruel world.
How sad was it: Two and a half outta five tears. Definitely shocking and sad, but not entirely heartbreaking and/or traumatic.
15. Game Of Thrones - Jon Snow
Why it ruined your life: This one was so unexpected that we're still not quite over it, and we don't think we've ever gasped at the TV quite as loudly as we did when Jon was killed by that little git Olly. YES it's fairly likely that he'll somehow return from beyond the grave to be even fitter, darker and more mysterious, but that doesn't help mend our broken hearts.
How sad was it: Six tears out of five. Fairly devastating, really.
Bonus death: The Simpsons - Maude Flanders
Why it ruined your life: Because it made Ned sad and that's just not okily dokily. But if you're gonna go, then getting killed by Homer Simpson's tshirt gun isn't a bad way to go.
How sad was it: SO SAD.
