We think it's fair to say that The Hunger Games was a box office smash, but apparently movie director Gary Ross won't be working on the remaining films.

Hunger Games Director Gary Ross says he won't be working on the movie sequel, Catching Fire

It's always a bit contentious when a book is made into a movie, but after the huge success of the on-screen adaptation it's surprising to hear that director Gary Ross has given up the opportunity to work on the next installment.

With the sequel, Catching Fire, provisionally due for release in November 2013, it sounds like Gary was concerned about the time pressure on making the next movie.

In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, Gary explained his decision, saying: "As a writer and a director, I simply don't have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule."

As well as directing the flick, Gary co-wrote the screenplay with Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins, but won't be working on the script for sequel Catching Fire either and instead hands over the task of co-writing to Full Monty scriptwriter Simon Beaufoy.

Lionsgate, who are producing the movie franchise, responded to the statement, saying: "We're very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct Catching Fire - we were really looking forward to making the movie with him.

"He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work."
