But you know, if it's not like actual HELL but really isn't pleasant all the same - then there are some things you can do to make it a little less of a bitch, by simply eating (and avoiding) certain foods around that time of the month.

Foods to avoid

There are loads of foods (good and bad for ya) that can cause bloating on the best of days - so avoiding these around the time of your period is generally a good idea, because everyone knows period = major bloat.

  • Fizzy drinks
  • Processed, sugary and high-fatty foods
  • Beans (baked, kidney and all the other kinds)
  • Cabbage

 Foods to eat

Good news is, by eating other types of foods around your period can dramatically reduce painful bloating, stabilize your iron levels (which will make you feel more energized and awake) and basically make you feel a lot less shit by adding in extra vitamins and happy hormones.

The vitamin B6, potassium and magnesium  in bananas help to reduce bloat. Hooraaay.

Salmon

The fatty acids in salmon, avocados and walnuts can actually help to relieve muscle tension and period pain. Holla.

(and other dark green veggies like spinach and broccoli) help to up your iron levels, that can go down when you mensturate, leaving you feel tired and sluggish.
