Is it real?

So yes, Mercury Retrograde itself is an astrological term – but for a lot of people (around 31-45% of people, actually) astrology is a very real thing which does have an affect on day to day life. And if you're not one of 'em, you need to just remember that the planet Mercury does not care if you believe or not. It's here to ruin your life. AGH.

What actually is it?

When the planet Mercury slows down on its axis, it appears to the human eye as though it's moving backwards, or being in 'retrograde.' It's this backwards-seeming motion which has an overwhelmingly crappy force on us mere mortals.

You can blame Mercury specifically because it's the planetary 'messenger,' ruling all forms of communication, perception, data, telecommunication, electronics and transport. So when Mercury retrogrades, ALL of these things get turned upside down and go to shit, basically.

It's not all bad news, though. As Mercury 'goes backwards', it also encourages us all to 'go back' and reflect on our past too - maybe completing old projects, or revisiting something from back in the day.

How often does it happen?

Mercury in retrograde happens three or four times a year. The one we're in now started on April 28th and will end on May 22nd, meaning there's still a lot of time to deal with life going pear-shaped for us all this spring. Oh good.

According to experts, you can expect 2016 Mercury Retrograde during January 5 to 25, April 28 to May 22, August 30 to September 22, and December 19 to 31. So you can look forward to all of them, can't ya?

What does it do to me?

Due to the elements of life that Mercury is involved with, a retrograde period can lead to an increase in misunderstandings, messy communication and confusion, which probably means more arguments, fallings out, and bitchiness in your life.

Delayed messages and responses can also be a thing, along with things not being expressed as they were really meant to be and on a more frustrating level, issues with technology. Oh god no NOT BAD INTERNET.

Make sure you do:

Go back to old projects (maybe a blog, writing a book or re-organising your wardrobe), it's a good time to revisit things from the past, wrap up loose ends and find your closure.

Take time to plan your future - just don't act on it quite yet. Once the cycle is over, you'll feel refreshed and can bounce back into action with renewed vigour and a much clearer sense of what you should do.

Take extra care to check details. Mercury in retrograde is known for making people forgetful, so keep a close eye on your calendar, read the small print, and check your keys every once in a while.

Expect stuff to go a bit tits up. Mercury's the ruler of transportation, so be prepared for travel hiccups like flight delays, breakdowns or planned trips taking an unexpected turn. It's always good to have a Plan B for anything in life.

Try and express yourself more clearly than usual. Miscommunication with thoughts, ideas and opinions is rife during retrograde, so work harder than normal o get any important points across. And make sure you're listening properly to others - any negative comments that you take to heart are likely to have been caused by crossed wires right now.

Make sure you don't:

Initiate anything new (signing contracts, big life decisions, starting or ending relationships). You probably won't communicate as effectively as you normally would, and things won't go smoothly.

Purchase any major items (like cars, a phone, anything spendy). Mercury is famed for causing glitches in anything with moving parts - so you're bound to end up needing repairs. Not ideal.

Put your life on hold because of all of this. IMPORTANT. Sure, if you're into astrology then it's definitely something to keep in mind and it could explain why you're having a rough time. YEP Mercury retrograde is kind of a bitch, but as long as you're prepared to fight it all head on and stay strong with whatever it throws at you, you can smash your way through it no problem.
