Read the book or watch the show... either way it's certified intellectual

Our mums always say shut that TV off and read a book! Now, of course, being Sugarscape book club we support this statement. Reading is awesome. However, sometimes you really do just want to chill out in front of the TV and watch pretty moving pictures.

For these moments why not just watch a TV show that's based on a book? That way you can tell your mum that you pratically are reading... sort of.

So here are our top 10 TV shows based on wonderful books (including such faves as Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars) that you should definitely read, after watching the shows...

10. The Waltons

The Waltons TV show was created by Earl Hamner Jr., based on his book Spencer's Mountain. Ah, how we remember watching it on daytime TV, following all those story lines about John-Boy's antics or dreaming of Grandma Esther Walton's cooking. But really, the best scene of all time is when they say goodnight, right?

9. Pretty Little Liars

Based on the novels by Sara Shepard where Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily start receiving stange messages from an unknown source a year after the disappearance of their Queen Bee Alison DiLaurentis. We're as addicted to the show as we were to the books... and we rather enjoy this scene...

8. Dexter

The first season of hit show Dexter was based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. In the book (just like the show really) Dexter is a forensic blood spatter pattern analyst (can you imagine telling your careers advisor that's what you want to be?) who has a dark, dark secret. He's actually a sociopath with the urge to kill but turns his attention on murderers, rapists and bad people generally to bring justice and relieve his blood lust. We doubt there'll ever be a show as twisted as this again on TV...

7. Goosebumps

Reading the Goosebumps books by R. L. Stine in our bed at night under the duvet we used to get so freaked out. When the show started it only heightened our fears of monsters/clowns/toy dolls. This intro music still gives us the chills...

6. Friday Night Lights

This awesome TV show was based on the book Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team and a Dream by H.G. Bassinger. It follows the Permian High School Football team from Odessa Texas as they try to make it in the Texas State championship. This is the opening scene from the pilot episode... So. Many. Hot. Men.
