Find out what she thinks about Four and Tris making it to the movies
We were lucky enough to catch up with author Veronica Roth to chat about the second book in her Divergent series, Insurgent as well as asking her all sorts of questions about everything from soulful hero and fittie Four to the possibility of the trilogy making it onto the big screen..
Before you get going, why not read the first two chapters of Insurgent for free here.
We’ve been waiting and waiting for Insurgent to come out and now it’s finally here, how are you feeling about it being out there for all to see?
It never quite feels real on the release date itself because I’ve been dealing with it and talking about it for a very long time, so I have to go into a book store and see it to make it feel real and I haven’t had the chance to do that just yet! It’s definitely a relief not to have to guard so much against spoilers and it’s a little scary to release it into the world and let people judge it for themselves, but also really rewarding too.
Divergent had a pretty shocking conclusion, what changes as we begin Insurgent?
You can expect to see a lot more of the different factions and how they relate to each other this time round, and to find a lot more about the world that Tris lives in and the people that she knows too. Sometimes surprising things, sometimes not so surprising things.. I don’t want to give too much away!
A large part of the developing storyline is the relationship between Four and Tris – what do you think the dynamic is between them?
I think Insurgent marks the end of the honeymoon period for Tris and Four – what it’s like when you meet someone and you’re all gaga over them, but then you find out that they’re a real person with real flaws and that those flaws cause conflict between you. Plus they’re also living in a world that’s starting to fall apart because of conflict so that causes a lot of difficulties too. Basically they find out what it’s like when you don’t agree about everything all of a sudden and they have to decide whether it’s the right relationship to be in and how they can navigate this rough, conflicted situation that we’re in.
As far as we’re concerned, Four sounds like our idea of the perfect guy – is he based on someone you are lucky enough to know?
He’s really not! Most of the characters are loosely based on different parts of my personality and he is actually the character most similar to me! Obviously not in the good looking, deadly male way, but just in the personality sort of way. I guess I sound a bit egotistical to say I base all my characters on myself but I just think that’s sort of natural because you’re the person you know best.
That’s a shame as we were really hoping for an introduction! We’ve been having a LOT of discussion in the office about which actors we’d like to see play Tris and Four if a movie version of the books was to be made – is there anyone in particular you would like to see play them?
I think about this ALL the time, but you know what? I’ve never found anyone who I think looks right to play Four and Tris is sort of hard because she’s not classically attractive – and obviously most actresses are for obvious reasons! So I haven’t been able to figure it out, but hopefully we’ll see!
