“Soulmate” Amy Winehouse helped him through his ordeal
The Voice contestant Tyler James hasn’t had an easy ride in recent years. Only last year he lost his best friend Amy Winehouse, and back in 2005 he was the victim of a gang attack that left him severely injured, too scared to leave the house and reliant on alcohol.
Speaking to heat magazine, Tyler told of the East London attack that broke both his cheekbones, his jaw, nose and three parts of his spine.
“I was in Bow and this gang came up to me. They said ‘Give me your phone,’ but as I went to put my hand in my pocket, they started punching me... I couldn’t get myself up, I was covered in blood. I felt a foot go across my nose and heard it break.
“It was horrible, terrifying. I was just waiting to get stabbed.”
It took a plastic surgeon to put his nose together, and after leaving hospital Tyler turned to drink to give him confidence to leave the house. He now says it was Amy, who would become his on-off girlfriend who helped him get his life back together.
“She made me chicken soup. I’d cry my eyes out... at first it didn’t feel right to sleep together, but after I got better, it just felt right. She was my soulmate.”
