Suspected gunman arrested in a car park nearby
A shooting at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises at a cinema in Denver, Colorado has killed 12 people and left 38 injured.
According to the BBC, witnesses said the gunman was wearing a gas mask and threw tear gas canisters into the crowd before opening fire.
Police have confirmed suspect 24-year-old James Holmes was in possession of a rifle, handgun and a knife when he was arrested in a car par nearby.
Police said about 50 people had been shot in total including children, teenagers and a three-month-old baby.
Police chief Dan Oates said: "Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister.
"They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire.
"The shooting apparently went on for some time."
The Paris premiere of The Dark Knight Rises has now been cancelled, along with interviews with journalists in the city.
