The world's first 'spontaneous' awards ceremony had some surprises

Saturday saw the first ever YouTube Music Awards take place and it was a ceremony like no other. Streamed live on YouTube, with performances from various cities around the globe, there was no actual plan or script for the event. Gulp.

Co-hosts actor Jason Schwartzman and performance artist Reggie Watts were only given a list of bullet points about the awards by creative director Spike Jonze, with the aim apparently being to create a spontaneous event unlike anything before.

"There were no lines and nothing scripted and we had no idea what was going to happen next," Schwartzman said afterwards. Which sounds sort of exciting but also a bit scary.

Winners included Eninem, who fended off tough competition in the Artist of the Year category, beating One Direction, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry to pick up the gong.

One Direction also missed out on the Video of the Year award for 'Best Song Ever', as did Demi Lovato's 'Heart Attack' and Miley Cyrus for 'We Can't Stop'. Instead, Girls' Generation emerged victorious, for their 'I Got A Boy' vid. Wowzah.
