Guys - cast your minds back to last August. The X Factor's just started for another series, we've resigned ourselves to the fact we won't be socialising any weekend for the next four months and a boy from Billingham's just slayed his arena audition with a super emotional rendition of Labrinth's 'Jealous.' That boy's Josh Daniel and - we hate to spoil it for ya - but he doesn't make it through to the lives. LIVID.
Yup - Nick Grimshaw decided not to take our Josh any further in the competition at judges' houses (we couldn't have screamed at the telly more tbh); but NEVER FEAR. He's back with the full version of his original audition song and it's all kinds of awesome. Also there's no hard feelings, so that's cute.
Let's catch up with him to see what's goin' down, shall we?
Oh hey, Josh. What can ya tell us about 'Jealous,' then? Why that song?
The new track Jealous is a full version release of the song I auditioned with on the X Factor, ever since it aired I've been inundated with requests from people asking for it, and although it was hard for me to revisit because it bears a close emotional relevance to me, the fans were impossible to ignore.
Plus I was a little conscious that the creative process can sometimes be lengthy with original music, and wanted everyone to have something of mine to listen to in the mean time.
And how's life been post-X Factor?
Considering I exited the competition when I did, the fact I've still been fortunate enough to experience a private jet and fly around the world recording in America & Dubai, been on a UK tour and worked at both Roc Nation and Sony ATV with some incredibly talented people, means I already feel like I've massively outweighed any expectations I had for my career off the back of the show.
' Jealous' reaching the top 100 UK Singles and #2 in UK singer/songwriter chart on Day 1 was just icing on the cake. It makes me mega excited for my original music to come out. Feeling truly blessed.
Who are your biggest influences as an artiste and all that malarky?
One of my biggest influences is John Legend, he always has been, I often get likened to him when people hear me sing which I've never really noticed. But I guess that's a pretty nice compliment haha. But I draw inspiration from lots of different artists, even outside of the genres you might expect. There's value to be taken from all musicians/writers.
My sound is going to be very much pop R&B, but capturing a flavour I don't feel anyone is doing at the moment which I'm sure you'll hear soon. I'm keeping my writing style fairly broad so that I can showcase to everyone that I can portray any kind of emotion just as well as sadness.
For those who might not have caught you on the show, can you give us five facts about yourself?
I supported Tine Tempah on his Demonstration Tour a couple of years back. I'm also a Foreign Currency stock market trader in my spare time and ran a business in Trading Tuition for 2 years.
I used to be a music producer primarily before I got into singing on a serious level, and I'm just starting to get back into it which I'm loving. Once I wrote a small children's book, and always loved literature. This is my inner geek coming out now, maybe it will resurface on shelves one day if music doesnt work out.
Oh, and the first ever single I bought was Girls Aloud's 'Sound of the Underground,' so it was kinda mad meeting Cheryl, although I didn't tell her, you know how it is, you have to play it cool, haha.
What can we expect from your album, eh Joshua?
The album I'm HUGELY excited for. Expect to learn about me as a person. Expect feel good, expect emotional, and expect a collaboration or two with some artists everyone will definitely already know. Its going to be a really carefully crafted body of work, I feel like the fans deserve only my best.
Got any gigs lined up? WE WANNA COME SEE YA.
This year I have a few big shows in the Diary, I'm at the Skylive Airshow in Teesside headlining to 10 thousand people at the end of May, anyone attending the annual Ladies Day in Durham this year will also see me there too, so it will be nice to be back in the North for a couple of dates. Above that we are gearing up for a UK support tour and are hoping to get out to Ibiza & Dubai again in Summer so EU & UAE should get some dates too.
Keep eyes on my social media for all dates and venues first.
Josh's single 'Jealous' is available to stream on Spotify and download on iTunes now. Hoorah.
