If you haven't heard of 21-year-old Melanie Martinez from New York, where on God's green Earth have you been? Back in 2012 she competed on The Voice over in America before *finally* releasing her debut album Cry Baby last year. And guess what? We just had to catch up with her for a chinwag as she performed two headline shows in London last week.
Yup - we spoke to Melanie about errrythang for music to her awesome style as she signed copies of the album at HMV. Hoorah.
Oh hey, Melanie. First off, can you give us five facts about yourself even Google can't tell us?
My favourite place to be is home, because I find that I can write more and I find I get more inspiration when I'm in one place. Traveling and touring's really hard for me, and I tour a lot.
I'm really clumsy. I spill things on myself all the time at restaurants and stuff. I fall over all the time, too.
If Donald Trump becomes the president of the United States I'm probably gonna move to Amsterdam, so that's another thing.
I'm currently writing my next album. People kind of know that, but it's fun.
Oh, and I have a cool hat on right now from Amsterdam that's baby pink and fluffy.
Now your album is called Cry Baby, but when was the last time you actually did cry like a baby and why?
It was actually a few days ago. I cry, like, every day. It was just because sometimes I get overwhelmed and overthink my life completely. Moments like that.
If anybody hasn't heard you music yet, which they bloody should have by now, how would you describe your sound to them?
My music is very visual, so a lot of the songs have sounds that represent whatever I'm talking about in it. You kind of feel like whatever the theme is; you can see it when listening to it. Thatw as the goal.
Also it tells a story, so if you listen to Cry Baby from start to end it's telling the story of this character [Cry Baby, strangely enough] and her life. She's based on myself and I wanted to title the album Cry Baby because when I was a kid I was picked on and called 'cry baby' for being super emotional. I wanted to write an album that was going to help me.
I wasn't thinking about it in the moment, but after the album was done I realised that was me venting and expressing how I felt. Through that I was able to overcome a lot of insecurities.
Your style's also so cool, who and what are your inspirations fashion-wise?
I just sort of pick out whatever pastel vintage clothing I can find in stores or online, and whenever I'm designing outfits for stage and music videos I'm usually inspired by children's clothing from the sixties.
Love it. And finally, Melanie, if you had to persuade people to download the album in five words what would they be?
Creepy, emotional, visual, [a] story, whimsical and horror. That's six, but if I were to make it a movie it'd probably be a horror movie.
