What's the story?
If you'd told us, back in the Camp Rock days, that Nick Jonas would be bringing all the urban-tinged bops in 2016 we'd probably have laughed in your face. No shade, like; we loved him back then. We just never thought we'd see our big brother jammin' to 'Jealous.'
ANYWAY, after releasing his debut solo and a few smash singles last year Nicholas Jerry Jonas is back with his new 'un; Last Year Was Complicated. Now obviously we've already heard 'Close' and 'Chainsaw,' but what does the rest of the record have to offer?
Hint: There's a track called 'Bacon,' so we're off to a DELICIOUS start.
How does the album pan out?
Pretty bloody well, actually. If you're anything like us you'll have been borderline obsessed with his debut; and Last Year With Complicated's just a massive step up from that. No 'difficult second album' curse here. Nope.
The album kicks off with 'Voodoo' - a jaunty tune about being totally under a girl's spell - and it's just hit after hit from the get-go. Everything's just bigger this time around; from the production to the pipes. Seriously, though. Those FALSETTOS. Christ.
It's also a lot more instant than the first album, which we always thought was a bit of a grower tbh.
Tracks most likely to top the charts:
Oh, there are loads of potential smashes on here. Not gonna lie, when we first got the album we skipped straight to Ty Dolla $ign collab 'Bacon.' A song by Nick Jonas and everyone's fave rent-a-rapper Ty about the streakiest of sweetcure meats? WHAT KIND OF GENIUS?
Turns out 'Bacon' *is* actually one of our faves on the album; a track about life being so bloody brilliant it could only be better topped with bacon. Amazing.
It's also worth pointing out we're obsessed with 'Under You' (sounds a bit like Taylor Swift's 'Style,' similarly awesome), the 90s chilled house vibes of 'Comfortable' and big ballad 'Unhinged' which is basically the story of our lives tbh.
Oh ALSO we're loving Big Sean collab 'Good Girls.' Big Sean <3
We'd listen to it...
After a breakup/when the cat's not speaking to us. As the title suggests, Last Year Was Complicated's about Nick's split from Olivia Culpo and it explores the theme of lost love perfectly. The anger, the confusion, that WAH I MISS HIM/HER/THEM SO MUCH I WANT TO CRY UNTIL THE DAY I DIE feeling.
Give 'Champagne Problems' a listen. That pretty much sums it up.
After listening to it we felt like:
Eating a bacon butty. Any excuse, eh?
