The dreams of many of us came true in April of 2012 when chart toppers One Direction and Justin Bieber just happened to be recording in the same studio. One Direction, consisting of teen heart throbs Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik first came to attention in 2010 when they came third in popular singing contest the X-Factor. They quickly signed to Simon Cowell's Syco Records and have been going from strength to strength ever since. Justin Bieber first came to attention when he was discovered by a talent scout on Youtube in 2008 at the tender age of 14. He exploded onto the pop scene becoming a music sensation very quickly having won numerous awards and sold over 15 million albums to date.
On that fateful day in April 2012, the teen sensation Bieber, invited British group One Direction into his studio to listen to what he was recording. The group got on so well that they resolved to “hook up” again and record some material together. One Direction then tweeted what had happened and Bieber/One Direction fever erupted online. Bieber has since been credited for One Directions new found popularity in the United States, however, Bieber, already being world famous, does not need their help gaining popularity in the UK.
In July 2012, tickets for Bieber's “Believe” tour went on sale in the UK, while One Direction were busy charming fans in the states. When tickets for the show went on sale, they surpassed ticket sales for One Directions 2013 concert within four days. Various online ticket purchasing sites reported a higher demand for Bieber tickets than both JLS and The Wanted combined. In fact, according to the MTV news website, Justin Bieber has seen a 216 per cent increase in ticket searches online. A fact which makes his concert five times more popular than One Directions previous concert. It has been reported that Justin Bieber is in fact more popular than all of the band members of One Direction put together which is amazing considering the fact that the “Boyfriend” singer only graduated from high school in July 2012.
Website Visual.ly recently pitted the teen sensations against each other comparing Justin Bieber/One Direction ticket sales and social media impact. The results speak for themselves. In terms of ticket sales, it took Bieber 30 seconds to sell out all of his 46 tour dates online, compared to the 10 minutes it took One Direction to sell out their 60 tour dates. In terms of social media, Bieber has a staggering 43.9 million, 22.8 million and 2.5 billion fans on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube respectively compared with One Directions 6.4 million, 4.1 million and 369 million fans. One Direction's figures seem modest by comparison!
