The BRIT Awards are just hours away, and what better way to celebrate than taking a look back at the most memorable moments of ceremonies past?
Yup, The BRITS has been no stranger to controversy over the years, from Robbie Williams offering to fight Liam Gallagher to Justin Timberlake having a good ol’ grope of Kylie Minogue’s bum.
So, with no further ado let’s take a journey through the past – and hope that every single one is recreated tonight. Lorde, perhaps you could offer to fight James Corden?
1. Joss Stone’s inexplicable American accent
Despite being from a small town in Devon, Joss Stone managed to baffle audiences by unveiling an American accent as she took to the stage in 2007 to present an award. Even host Russell Brand couldn’t let it slide, telling the audience he was ‘a bit worried about that poor cow’.
2. Justin Timberlake feels up Kylie Minogue
Justin and Kylie’s duet of probably would have made the top ten list anyway, even without JT grabbing a handful of the famous Minogue bum mid performance.
3. Robbie Williams challenges Liam Gallagher to a fight
After Liam Gallagher labelled Robbie the 'fat dancer from Take That', Rob used his acceptance speech to challenge Liam to a fight.
“So, anybody like to see me fight Liam? Would you pay to come and see it?” he shouted. “Liam, a hundred grand of your money and a hundred grand of my money. We'll get in a ring and we'll have a fight and you can all watch it on TV, what d'you think about that?" Awkward.com
4. Russell Brand as host
Hiring Russell was always going to be a slightly risky move, and the comedian lived up to the scandalous expectation, with a series of risqué jokes.
His reference to the Queen’s ‘naughty bits’, joke about Amy Winehouse’s surname ‘beginning to sound like a description of her liver’ and jibe about friendly fire in Iraq all combined to generate a total of 300 viewer complaints. In other words, it was TV GOLD.
5.The Arctic Monkeys get bitchy
In 2008 The Arctic Monkeys absolutely SLATED the Brits school in their acceptance speech, which had to be cut from the edited version of the show. Teehee.
This moment was made even better by the fact they were holding a plastic duck at the time.
6. Amy Winehouse vs. Dido
In 2004 Amy Winehouse was nominated in the Best British Female category, which the entire world assumed would go to Dido. In response, the singer and Simon Amstell filmed themselves running around the streets with a megaphone conducting an ‘anti-Dido’ campaign.
Telling people that ‘Dido likes to hurt small animals’ and hurling fruit at a billboard advertising Dido’s album are just two highlights.
7. Geri Halliwell boob flash
As the Spice Girls went up to collect an award in 1997, Geri suffered breast-based a wardrobe malfunction as she did a little celebration jig. Oops.
8. Adele giving the finger
Who can forget the moment at last year’s Brit Awards, when Adele fipped the bird after having her acceptance speech cut short? Feisty one she is.
9. Ronnie Wood in an almost fight
In 2000, Ronnie Wood threw a drink over a drunk DJ Brandon Block – who stormed the stage after being convinced by a friend that he had won the award for Best Soundtrack. This was despite the fact that he wasn’t nominated.
10. John Precott gets soaked
Chumbawumba (yes, they were an actual thing) band member Danbert Nobacan chucked a bucket of water over then Labour cabinet member John Prescott, claiming: “If John Prescott has the nerve to turn up at events like the Brit Awards in a vain attempt to make Labour seem cool and trendy, then he deserves all we can throw at him.” Fair point.
