Ed Speelers' friends warned him not to get involed with an older girl, and now he wishes he'd taken their advice onboard...
 
“When I was 15, I started dating a girl at my school called Layla* who was 18. She was gorgeous and I thought I was so cool to be going out with an older girl. Plus she was my first proper girlfriend, so I was really into her.

"From the start, my friends seemed down on her. They said she wasn’t good enough for me, but I ignored them, thinking they were jealous I had such a hot older girlfriend.

"As the months passed, the rumours got worse. Now I was hearing Layla was cheating on me with other guys. Even worse, she was apparently boasting about it.
Yet I refused to believe it. I was so in love, I didn’t even confront her."

The rumours were true...
"A few months later, at Christmas, we did end up finishing. It was kind of mutual: I’d begun to find her demanding, and I think she was getting bored of me too. But I couldn’t get the rumours out of my head, and I started asking around to see if there was any truth in them. Pretty soon I discovered that she had cheated on me – and it hadn’t been a one-off."

I felt so stupid...
“At first, I was heartbroken. I’d trusted this girl and I felt stupid for defending her to my friends. Luckily it didn’t cause a rift with my mates as I knew they’d been trying to help me. I just felt humiliated. But once I’d got over the initial hurt, I started to joke about with my friends, which helped. It was sad that a girl who we’d thought was mature had to resort to cheating on her boyfriend to get attention. She was an idiot."

"Although I was over her, Layla’s behaviour definitely affected my relationships for a while. I assumed all girls behaved the same and couldn’t trust anyone. For a couple of years I didn’t let anyone get close. But when I met my current girlfriend, Amy, it all changed. I talked to her about my experience, and she was horrified. She made it clear she would never behave that way. We’ve been together for over a year now and are so happy. I know whatever happens, that honesty will always be there.”
