Remember when Puff Daddy changed his name to P Diddy? Yeah, well this is weirder than that.
Legendary rapper Snoop Dogg - real name Calvin Broadus - held a press conference in New York yesterday, to announce that from now on he will be known as Snoop Lion. Say whaaaat?
Snoop Dogg, err, sorry - Lion - claimed that he was "born again" during his trip to Jamaica at the beginning of this year, and as a result is not only changing his name, but also wants to make music that his "kids and grandparents can listen to."
Wait, there's more. The rapper's forthcoming single 'La La La' and album 'Reincarnated' will be released under the name of Snoop Lion, with the latter featuring track 'No Guns Allowed'.
Speaking about the transformation, Snoop said: "I didn't want to be Snoop Dogg on a reggae track...I wanted to bury Snoop Dogg and become Snoop Lion, but I didn't know that until I went to the temple and received the name Snoop Lion from the Nyabingi priest.
“From that moment on, I started to understand why I was there and was able to create something magical in this [Reincarnated] project...something I haven't done before in my career.”
WAIT THERE'S MORE. Snoop
Dogg Lion will also be releasing a 'Reincarnated' documentary - which follows Snoop as he records his new album in Jamaica - and presumably shows how the whole Snoop Lion thing came about.
Which is good, because we're really quite confused. Have a watch of the doco trailer below and see if it makes things any clearer.
What the heck to you make of all this?
